Law Clerk Opportunities at MCEA

Volunteer Law Clerk

U of M Off-Campus Work Study

MCEA seeks a current University of Minnesota law student for a fall or spring work study position at MCEA. If you are interested please contact the U of M work study office, where they will determine your eligibility and grant you a referral to MCEA.  

Minnesota Justice Foundation

MCEA will have an internship through the Minnesota Justice Foundation (MJF) during the summer of 2012. 1Ls and 2Ls apply through MJF, organizations select candidates to interview, and then select their summer intern. For more information and to apply go to MJF’s clerkship page. MCEA also accepts MJF volunteers throughout the year.

Position Description

Experience/Education Requirements

Law student currently enrolled, 2L or 3L student preferred or recently graduated. Background in environmental law, administrative law, or natural resource law preferred. Strong legal research and writing experience.

Job Duties

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

1. Research legal issues identified by supervising attorney and write memoranda providing legal analysis and summarizing findings within specified deadlines.

2. Provide support for MCEA’s litigation efforts, including document review, contact with administrative agencies, drafting of pleadings, and other litigation needs as appropriate.

3. Work with MCEA attorneys to serve MCEA’s legal needs, including analyzing potential cases, research and development of legal strategies, litigation, and day to day legal advice.

4. Attend administrative agency meetings and hearings as appropriate and participate in internal MCEA meetings.

OTHER PERFORMANCE CRITERIA:

1. Ability to work independently.

2. Good working relationship with MCEA staff.

3. Clear, logical, and focused analysis and synthesis of cases/ideas.

4. Excellent writing ability.

5. Positive contribution to team-oriented work environment.

Work Schedule

Flexible, hours available Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm. Depending on project and research needs, some work may be conducted off-site, with permission of supervisor.
