Reducing Run-Off

What can you can do to reduce storm water run-off problems?

1.       Reroute your downspouts by moving them or adding flexible extensions so the water flows onto grass or gardens rather than hard surfaces. Consider using a rain barrel and reusing the water for your garden.

2.       Do not fertilize your grass-- nutrients cause algae growth.

3.       Sweep up grass clippings or fertilizer that land on hard surfaces such as driveways and sidewalks.

4.       Eliminate or severely limit pesticide use. A few dandelions never hurt anybody.

5.       When watering the lawn or garden, do not water the sidewalk, street or driveway.

6.       Pick up animal waste.

7.       Do not rake leaves into gutters or alleys.

8.       Eliminate or strictly limit the use of salt and chloride products to melt snow and ice. Sand is a better choice.

9.       Building a new home? Ask your builder about shorter driveways, permeable pavement, rain gardens, and green roofs.
