Join the call for action on SE Minnesota’s drinking water crisis

By signing onto this petition, your name may be submitted to EPA or a state agency in support of MCEA's efforts to reduce nitrate pollution in groundwater in SE Minnesota.

Nitrate levels in the karst region routinely exceed federal and state drinking water standards, putting the health of approximately 380,000 area residents at serious risk – private well owners are particularly impacted. Nitrate-contaminated drinking water can lead to health problems including cancer, thyroid disease, and birth defects and low birth weight in infants.

On April 24th, MCEA and a group of ten local, state, and national environmental groups filed a petition to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asking for emergency action to address the ongoing drinking water crisis in southeastern Minnesota. In addition to EPA action, we also want to see greater state and local government action to protect drinking water in the karst region of Minnesota and to hold polluters accountable when they contaminate the water supply.
